Each year there have always been 3 blog sites that seem to:

keep me motivated;

in-tune with what I want to achieve; and

make me take an action towards my goals

and this year they are…

Michael Hyatt

Is the blogger that I read almost religiously (pun intended).

Every year, I find new industry leaders to follow and learn from. For 2012, Michael Hyatt’s blog has helped kick my professionalism and leadership focus up a gear. While centreing around the base principles of the Bible.

While I don’t go to church. Could not call myself a protestant or a catholic. I do believe in God and so having straight talking leadership blog post, laced with a little bit of bible reference helps keep me centre.

Zen Habits

I know I moved from Christianity to Buddhism…but I don’t really care. At the heart of any religion is people and it’s those people’s behaviors and attitudes that help model and shape the life you live.

Decluttering, minimalism and simplicity are the reasons I read Zen Habits.

My head is probably the most cluttered workspace, that I can not escape from. Often filled with over thinking, under executing and worry about things that are not being done. It’s in reading Zen Habits, that I realise nothing is as complex as it seems. I’ve just added emotions and ideas to spin it out of proportion.

All I have do is bring it back to it’s core purpose, function and role…then everything (mentally) is at one with the world.

I Will Teach You To Be Rich

The website title is something I would normally stay away from, as it sounds a bit too spammy. It was only because a friend of mine worked with him directly, that I decided to check it out.

Ramit is not a get rich quick scammer. He is a straight shooter, who teaches the general law of reciprocity. When you give, you shall receive.

He might come across as arrogant. However, what I have learnt, is he is no different to anybody else. He has things he is embarrassed about, things most people would not bring attention to.

Yet, what does do differently that sets him apart from anybody else, is that he presents the information with a positive spin on it. That you end up laughing with him, not at him.

This comes back to fear, things we say to ourselves to stop us achieving what we want to. When we change the wording and how we spin it in our head and to others, makes a world of difference on the outcomes.

People are natural born learners

We have the ability to soak in information, model it into a new idea and then execute that information to make positive changes to the lives of others as well as ourself.

Having [virtual] mentors is important for your personal and business growth. Whether they are expert ‘bloggers’ or hired coaches, find and surround yourself with people (even mentally surround) who are already walking the walk you want to take.

It is only then that you can grow and change into the person you desire to be.

Until next,

learn, twirl and execute

Everyday we are overwhelmed with the must dos, should dos and have to dos.

It is easy to get bogged down in tactics, procedures and guidelines for achieving the life you desire.

Turning everything into a game, has always helped me get through any situation that scares me.

A Story…

While most people won’t believe this, I was quite shy. Talking to people I have never met before scared me.

The way I over came this was to turn every event, into a game. At each event I take a different approach.

One time, I hijack the camera off the event host and assumed the role of “photographer” this allowed me an easy in to talk to different people, find out enough about them to write a cool blog post. But not enough time for them to find out about me.

An unintentional after effect, curiosity. Who was that girl? when people have curiosity, the go out of their way to find out more.

Another time, I hijacked tables…

I went to different tables at this gala event and said “Hi, I’ve taken it upon myself to hijack tables and have a fun night, how is your night going?” Watching people’s reactions and how they interacted with me was fun.

Score! Three client meetings and more curiosity about what I do. Again another unintentional after effect.

Last story…

At a very sophisticated art gallery event, where “notable” people were attending, I introduced myself as the “meeter of random people”.

By doing this, I had a very fun and interesting conversation with a gentleman who I later found out was the Mayor (oops!). It’s always helpful to be on the good side of influential people.

If You Are Scared of Meeting New People, or Making “The” Phone or Sending “That” Email

Just remember, people respect:

guts

opening yourself to rejection

the ability to have fun anywhere anytime

It’s not easy to do those things, and most of the time I try not to think too deeply about it. However when I do get scared, I think of two things:

1. How can I make them look awesome

2. How can I have fun with this

Making “It” Happen

Seeking extra information, tactics or tips is our stalling process to say we are too scared to take the plunge and just do it.

Embracing the fear and doing it any way does not always work. Sucking it up, isn’t easy either.

But games… well now there is no harm no foul if you don’t win. It’s just a game.

Like a game, you may have to figure out another way to land on Mayfair. Buy all the property around it, build hotels. Grow your wealth using other means, in time you may be able to buy Mayfair or find that you have enough in your life that you no longer need it.

Either way the rules of the game are yours to make, the consequences of not achieving those goals are yours to determine. The same with the rewards, the more glorious the reward, the more cooler it is for you to achieve your goals.

So go … have fun and create a game. It’ll naturally help you from overdosing on information.

Until next time,

keep playing

Hello…hello to my regular blog readers, friends and curious new peeps!

Just wrapping up my final week in Malaysia, spending most of it celebrating Chinese New Year eating amazing food, spending time with family, as well as chasing fireworks and dragons around the town.

Chinese New Year here is crazy!

Unlike the western countries, they don’t spend their time writing a list of New Year resolutions (which most people fail to do anyway). They instead invest it in gambling, eating, family, friends, setting off fireworks in their backyard and praying for a prosperous new year (aka having fun!).

What I learnt from the Chinese

They don’t spend their time wishful thinking.

Everything they do is in an action. Chinese people are one of the most highest gamblers in the world, yet they are also one of the most richest people. They are willing to take risks that other people are not.

They work hard, focus even harder and have lots of fun celebrating any and every occasion they can.

Giving away money, is a joy for them! They believe by wishing you a prosperous new year…they will have a prosperous new year too.

Yes, some of their rules and family expectations are high. However, they still achieve amazing things.

Abraham Lincoln once said:-

“I am a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn’t have the heart to let him down…”

I am sure everybody goes through a stage in life where they know what they should be doing and are not.

We could give excuses, reasons and justifications for this – but what use does this have?

The Chinese just go out and do. We can learn a lot from this.

BJ Fogg‘s and Ramit‘s blogs, plus John Maxwell’s book Fail Forward, have taught me a lot about behavioral changes. If you are wanting a prosperous 2012, then this is where I suggest you should start. Changing your behaviors.

You know what you should be doing… so do it!

TV, Movies and the Experts Illusion

Success, prosperity and happiness is about having a fulfilling life with family and friends, they way you know how. Not how the TV, movies or other people elude to how it should happen.

Having lots of millionaire and successful business owner friends, I have been blessed to learn through them that success did not:-

a) happen overnight

b) by a one-click install

c) sitting on a beach with a laptop

For most over them, it took 3 years before they saw any real money or growth. I also learnt that it’s about tuning out the need for other people’s validation and approval, before taking the next move.

Feedback is important. However, waiting for the “right” answer, from the “right” person before moving forward is not.

Most of the time, you know what you should be doing…so you should just do it!

As I am hitting my third year in business, I look forward to getting over the hump year and cruising on through to another awesome year.

I know if I “do everything I know I should be doing” – I will get there.

Knowledge is not power, unless you do something with it!

So what are you going to do, this year?

Tweet or email me – look forward to hearing from you!

Xi Fa Chai - Happy Chinese New Year

Honestly when I started out in this industry, I did not set out to become an “expert”. Nor was it a goal of mine to be super awesome (and humble too) at it.

When I started out (my story here) in Online Marketing and Outsourcing, I was just playing with it. Turning it into some game, that I had to conquer and monopolize.

I had fun figuring out what worked, what didn’t. Why people loved it, why they hated it. What keywords and behavioral traits brought out positive outcomes…and the negative. Then learn from it.

This is the lazy man’s guide to outsourcing, because I am giving you some of the resources I have discovered and use the most. You don’t have to do anything but use them too.

So…

If you want to start outsourcing

Start small and use Fiverr

It constantly amazes me the quality of and how much work people are willing to do for just $5US.

My favorite graphic artist is Freestyldesign.

With Web management

This includes SEO, blog content and other continuous website work, use YourWebPA.

Chlea would have to be the best Filipino project manager I have ever worked with. Believe me, I have worked with heaps… as I am constantly testing different service providers. Chris Ducker’s team is amazing and best of all I don’t have to micro manage. They look after everything for you.

Social Media

Hootsuite and ShortStackApp.

The beauty of Hootsuite is being able to schedule your updates and monitor how productive they are through their analytics .

The great thing about ShortStackApp is that you can drag, drop and one-click-install a fantastic looking facebook page. Including competitions, email sign ups, photo apps.

The art of communicating with your Virtual Assistant (VA)

Is a separate post altogether.

Generally speaking, my rule of thumb when working with new people is

a) lay out your expectations clearly

This includes, but not limited to, defining their role, what results you’d like to see and the rewards for achieving this.

b) give feedback three (3) times to correct a situation

If they don’t “get it” after you have corrected them three times and it is not even semi-close to what you want. They are never going to get it.

c) smile and be open

If things go wrong always ask yourself “What was I expecting?” and “Did they know this?”

Communication is a two-way street and while some of us intuitively know what to do. There are a large group of people who need to be educated on understanding your needs and how to fulfill them.

After all, outsourcing is…

The art of being resourceful.

Resourcefulness is the art of knowing how to take action that delivers positive results.

So go on… get a wriggle on and start outsourcing today!

PS. The most awesomest book ever about business organization is E-Myth, if you have not read it…do so!

PPS. If you want to leave a comment, please email or tweet me would love to hear from you

There are three things to having an awesome social media presence.

1. Technology

2. Marketing

3. Product

You might read the above and say “I know this already!”. However, “knowing” this fact obviously isn’t working for you…why else would you be reading this blog post

Social Media is easy if you understand…

That social media is not the answer to being awesome Nor is it in the number of people who “follow” you or “like” you.

Though these things help with social evidence, what matters most is having a product/service that you believe in. Can see the benefits it offers to another’s life and can communicate it in such a way, that they can’t help but buy into the idea you are offering.

Frank Kern (known as one of the ‘Godfathers’ of internet marketing) has a brilliant video called State of the Internet. This video highlights cleverly how to use your product, marketing and technology to spread your awesomeness.

NB: The above link is not my affiliate link and I am not promoting his product. What I am doing is giving you the coolest link on how to maximise using the internet to build an awesome social media presence

People who fail at social media marketing

Have unrealistic expectations of it’s power.

People get lost in the hype and mechanics of social media. Instead of starting small, taking their time and learning through play.

Yes, corporations, governments and organisations need to legally protect their obligations. But implementing a Social Media Policy and/or Guideline, are easy fixes to solving those issues.

IBM have a great one (check it out here), the Victorian Justice Department have an awesome video (view it here) or simply purchase one from Blands Law (my affiliate link here).

Failing happens only when what you expected to occur…didn’t.

Being awesome online in 3 easy steps…

a) Treat everybody with the same respect, kindness and generosity you would for any new person who came into your life, as a potential new friend, colleague or associate…not as a potential new purchaser.

b) Make it an enjoyable experience

c) Know your expectations (make a sale). Communicate it (marketing – aka social media). Then deliver (technology – internet, post, store…coated with exceptional customer service) above and beyond their expectations

Once you do this, people will sing your praises online, offline and who knows – may be around the world!

Then wa-lah you’ll then have an awesome Social Media presence

Joy is the easiest thing to spread virally…because it’s a disease that everybody wants to have.

So go, have fun and spread a little joy!

Until next time, have fun, find hacks and enjoy life!

Caution: You will fail and your expectations won’t be met on some occasions. But that’s ok…because you are a tough cookie and will be willing tweak it, then try again

Want to leave a comment? Tweet or email me – would love to hear from you

My Goal For This Blog Post is…

For you to implement a tiny new habit

The new year has arrived and it’s time to fulfill your new year goals – if you have any.

Weirdly, I have gone all reverse psychology on myself this year and decided to take one day at a time. No amazing must get fit, have an awe inspiring blog, or rock the world with my awesomeness.

Just be the best person I can be each day and make the most of it.

Had you asked me my new year plans three months ago, it would be a whole different story

I had a fat calendar with specific things I was going to do and a deadline, amazingly the next 14 months were all planned out!

It was exciting and exhilarating looking at my super organized, highly motivated, goal achieving calendar…until the creative person in me felt suffocated, overwhelmed and on her way to a melt down.

Changing …

My mindset, editing my habits and learning the art of “letting go” – has turn 2012 from an over excited and challenging year, to probably the most rewarding one I am yet to live.

Currently I am in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, on a holiday.

Over three years ago, when I decided to enter the internet marketing industry, I wanted to have the luxury of working where ever and when ever I wanted to.

While, if I had to super honest with myself, I’d of like to be in a better financial position than I am now (I had thought I’d be rolling in $10,000 per month income). I am now officially living the dream I planned three years ago.

How did I get here?

Heaps and heaps of tiny little actions.

Some more emotionally tormenting then others, but each action – was tiny. Built with a little momentum and before you know it, caused multiple other tiny actions, leading to today.

Some of the significant things I did is:-

1. Registered my business in a company trust

I had experience as a legal secretary, as well as a hobby business that went south. I knew by registering my business in a company trust – it was no longer about me making decisions for myself, but for my “company” instead.

Lesson learned: Put your self in situations to shift your mental focus.

2. Asked for help from a well known Expert Internet Marketer

This was a huge emotional deal for me.

Mostly because I knew how many joint ventures, requests for help and proposals they received. Plus the tone of voice they used during this discuss, I knew how much they disliked this. Friendship with them was more important to me, then getting help to grow my business. The fear I had in loosing this friendship was quite overwhelming as I did not want them to think I was one of “those” people.

Lesson Learned: Experts are people too – they want to be liked, appreciated and valued. Don’t waste their time by asking for help – if you are not going to follow through. Cuz they enjoy helping others, just like everybody else.

3. Persisted even when I was loosing money

I remember about two years ago, crying my eyes out and going into the doona cave never wanting to return to the land of the living.

On the outside, I had the perfect life – I had made awesome connections, great friends, a cult following…plus a few other awesome things. But I was loosing money and did know to make it, automated or otherwise.

I was only good for:-

a) connecting people

b) inspiring them

Proving market value for brand awareness (connecting people with products, services or people) or opportunities (ideas, concepts and strategies) is really, really hard.

There are just some thing you can’t measure in business and this is one of them. You can do it a little bit, however tracking the source back to you is really difficult.

This is the “people connector’s curse – you have amazing influence but can’t commercialise it, because you love doing it and it comes naturally to you!

Luck was on my side (most probably because of my continual people connecting habit) and ended up landing a pretty good six month contract. Which I utilized to my full advantage to pave the way for the lifestyle I live today.

Lesson learned: Tiny actions, lead to momentous occasions.

Everything I did was easy…

I only complicated it and made it harder than necessary for myself, when I over thunk the consequences and actions required.

Many motivational sites, books and programs suggest that you find an accountability partner or hire one. This is futile. I’ve tried it many times and I always weasel my way out of them as they “no longer serve me”.

The habit of “knowing what to do, but am not doing it” really got to me. So I asked myself a few hard questions:-

why am I not doing it?

who is responsible for me not doing it?

what am I going to do about it?

In summary …

The buck stops with me I am responsible and accountable for all my decisions.

Why I am not doing it – does not matter as much as what am I going to do instead.

Pick a new habit.

3 Things I must do every day

1. Write down 3 tiny actions for the day

2. Do them

3. Celebrate

Now it’s your turn…

email or tweet me your next three tiny actions – I look forward to hearing from you.

Alternatively join BJ Fogg’s Tiny Habits and be guided by the director of Persuasive Tech Lab at Stanford University. His site explains habits and how to create new ones.

After all managing Social Media, Outsourcing or any other area of development in your life, is about creating a pattern of regular tiny habits. You repeat them so often, that you end up on auto-pilot and do them without thinking or hesitation.

This is the key to your success!

So have an awesome day,

PS. Notice my new habit of a new blog post every Tuesday…yep I am walking the talk (giving myself a little high five for that – cause who wants to write a blog post while on holiday?)

It was a bright and sunny day… the birds were out, there were people milling about and going about their day like any other day.

End of financial year was here and it was time to celebrate. But then out of the blue, I got a call that would change my life…

It was an accident…

A stumbling upon type thing. I had been made redundant and needed a new job. Unlike other stories you read on the web about people hating their day job and forks to “the man”. I loved my job. So to being made redundant as a legal secretary was a hit to my personal pride.

Since working 12 hour days were taking its toll against my family, I was looking for something closer to home with flexibility. So I did what anybody does when they are looking for a new job and jumped online. This is where I googled upon Virtual Assistants.

From there…

As they say the rest is history!

By deciding to become a virtual assistant it opened opportunities to go and meet new people, play with Twitter and network. It was also a big lesson in:-

Personal development

Stepping out of my comfort zone

Psychology

Business

What I did to hone my internet marketing skills

1. Make Friends With Expert Internet Marketers

In all the personal development and motivational readings I’ve read, the common statement is that “you become like those you surround yourself with”. So I set out to make new friends, but not with just anybody – I wrote down the values, beliefs and habits that I admire or aspire to be like.

Making new friends is difficult, especially if you mentally think your are ‘targeting’ specific people so you can get ahead in the direction you want to go.

One of those awful mental scripts and subconscious beliefs I had implanted by an ex-boyfriend, was “that to get ahead and be a millionaire or billionaire you had to step on others”.

My biggest fear in making friends with the expert internet marketers was for them to think that I was using them to get ahead…which was not my intent. I really really did want to be their friend and bask in their awesomeness.

So I made a point of promoting them, offering solutions that would help them get to where they want to go and expected nothing in return for doing this. I wanted to do this, because I wanted to be their friend. A true friend, is there for you when you need them, there is no contract, obligation or rules and regulations – you are just there. (Flattery will get you every where)

In learning how to be a friend to a consciously select group of people, I learnt that experts are just people like you and me. They have needs, wants and desires that need to be filled and anybody can do the job, if that is what they want to do.

I also mastered some great “getting-to-know-people” tips, flipping the conversation tactics, plus how certain words and habits had the power to influence peoples decisions. (If you’d like me to write a blog post on this topic please email me)

2. Completed BlogMastermind

I had signed up to “The Challenge” (free) plus a heap of other paid online marketing courses and never completed them. I don’t have a reason, justification or excuse why I never completed them. I just didn’t.

What motivated me to complete Blog Mastermind was most probably because I met Yaro, the creator of this course, in person. We were not friends back then, just two randoms who happened to be at the same networking event together.

I had seen Yaro’s stuff online previously and thought it was spam, it was only in that brief meeting that I realised how genuine he was (and still is).

Blog Mastermind isn’t available at the moment, however you can still get the same tips and advice for free from his site Entrepreneurs-Journey.com. If you want to create a niche site, then I recommend The Challenge (previously called The 30 Day Challenge), there is a wonderful forum that I’ve used heaps of times to meet some like-minded people in my area. I also have other close friends who got their start by doing their training course.

3. Get Private Coaching with Sarah Prout

This coaching session came off the back of listening to a webinar series called “The Millionaire Affair” (total mind blowing 10 day webinar with several millionaires like Derek Sivers, Wendy Moore, Cyndney Sullivan, Sarah Prout + more)

Through this coaching session I met some wonderful people, interacted with more internet marketing experts and sort to push myself to master this industry.

I read the 4 hour work week after becoming a virtual assistant

Plus other books, blogs and courses on outsourcing and online marketing. The thing that propelled me the most at being awesome at what I do…is the people I meet along this journey.

If it was not for Anthony and Nick being my accountability and “suck-it-up-princess” group, I’d probably gone back to a normal job. If it was not for a friendship with Gideon (awesome YouTube Marketer btw) that was a spin-off my friendship with Yaro, having the random creatives catch up would not occur, which helps recharge my creative juices. If it was not for The Hive, which was run by Nick, Mick and Walter – I wouldn’t have met Yaro, Richard, Jordan, + a heap of other people.

For the last “if it was not…” for Twitter – I would not have seen Yaro’s tweet about going to Entrepreneurs Night Out. Which I decided to go to and promote the hell out of…I would not have met James Tuckerman of Anthill Magazine. Who hired me to do what I do best (up until that point – I was doing what I needed to, just make money) which lead me to going to Melbourne…which lead me to meeting more awesome internet marketing people like Tim, Dave, Pete and Jen.

I think you get my point…people lead to people…lead to more people – who all offer a solution of some kind – to what ever problem you are having.

How you can start…

Write down the next three things you need to do to get where you want to go… and do them!

End of statement…no long list of tactics, suggestions or idea feeding.

If you don’t have the answer, ask for help – email, tweet, facebook. Follow that voice inside your head.

Just stop reading this blog post and do something

To awesomeness and beyond!

It’s been a little over a year now since I wrote a blog post. Writing this blog post in some way is kind of therapeutic.

Blogging for me has always been a way of self expression. A way to be heard, feel valued and above all respected for my knowledge.

When I started out, I had just broken up with my long term partner and decided to forge a career as a Virtual Assistant.

In the early days, I had nothing better to do with my time – so I’d blog.

Fast Forward 2 Years…Going On To 3

I am now well respected amongst my peers as the OutsourcingQueen.

I don’t need my blog or my social media profiles to prove that I am awesome at what I do. I have friends and extensive networks within internet marketing monarchy who can vouch for my awesomeness.

The squeamish feelings I use to have, when asked “can I do ___________”, have faded. I thought I needed practical examples of completing the task they had asked me to do. What I discovered is that they didn’t ask me “have I done _________” they asked me “can I do _________”.

To overcome the squeams, as deep down I have this integrity and honesty thing going on – that does not allow me to lie, my answer would be “Honestly, I have never done this before, however what I would do to handle this is (step 1), (step 2) and (step 3)”

I Learnt Action Squashes Fear

You really do become like the friends you keep. The same goes for clients.

Their attitude, beliefs and habits will either inspire you or hinder you.

James Tuckerman of Anthill Magazine would have to be one of the biggest influencers on how I run my business. The man is a ninja entrepreneur.

He has this incredible power of grabbing an idea, commercialising it, then automating it – so he can move on to the next idea. The speed in which he does this, is awe inspiring. Sometimes (most times) my head explodes at the speed I have to move to keep up with him. But I love it.

Without this whirl-wind turbo charged ‘take action’ personality in my life, I’d still be hiding in a black hole of talking the talk, but not walking the walk.

Being Creative Is A Hinderance As Well As A Blessing

The ability to see the bigger picture and breaking it down into tiny actionable pieces is awesome. The problem comes, with the over analysing and evaluating of those tiny actions to make sure they fit into the be bigger picture.

Let’s just say it’s mentally and emotionally exhausting.

You spend too much time on creating the concept, work out each piece and how it fits into the larger picture. Then go to someone (a friend or colleague) to validate you and your awesomeness, only to have them express an idea or concept to improve it.

Sometimes, You Just Need To Start

Why I quit blogging, was because I was overwhelmed with the compliments and encouragement. My need to people please and top my last post, to get more positive feedback – was just too much.

In the midst of creating an online presence, I was developing a virtual staff finding and internet marketing managing team.

Work consumed my life a little too much.

So I quit blogging.

Quitting sucks, because once you’ve made up in you mind that you don’t need to blog any more to prove your worth, knowledge or value , it is so hard to get started again.

For the last year since quitting, I have over 20 books filled with ideas, concepts and plans to re-launch either KateyShaw.com or OutsourcingQueen.com. To go a new direction with LaunchAnIdea.com or MashOutsource.com.

Last night I read How I Started Making $3,000 a Month Blogging About Travel by Marcello Arrambide. I was looking for a systematic process for online blogging. I have heaps of knowledge on this, e-tools and friends who’d help me in a heart beat. But for some reason, I’d just needed one more piece of information (because I’m an information-aholic) before starting.

Hearing his journey and closing comments inspired me to re-re-launch OutsourcingQueen.com as a blog.

So Today I Start, With My Blog Quite Bare

No email sign ups, service offers or brilliant sexy design.

Just this blog post, to say…

Start… Start now!

If you want to get online… buy a domain name, a hosting server and stick in a wordpress theme. Just get started it is surprisingly more easier than you think.

If you are scared because you don’t know what you are doing, or why you are doing it – contact me.

But take action, make a decision today to just start … and amazing things will happen for you.

Wishing you a rocking day!

Regards,
